Biotransformation and detoxification of a greater tinctorial textile colorant using an isolated bacterial strain

Abstract

The acclimated cells of Achromobacter xylosoxidans strain APZ wereemployed to decolorize a textile colorant, Reactive green 19A (RG19A) of greater tinctorial strength.The strain decolorized and simultaneously mineralized RG19Awith a high average decolorization rate of 208.33 μgmin^-1under normal operating (pH 7.0 and 35?C) and static conditions. The spectral and chromatographic data described that the decolorization was due to biodegradation facilitated by the extracellular oxidoreductases secreted by A. xylosoxidans strain APZ. The extent of RG19A mineralization during biotransformation was monitored by measuring the percentage reduction in the concentration of chemical oxygen demand and released aromatic amines. Plant growth parameters of seedlings of Phaseolus mungo, Triticum aestivum and Sorghum bicolor seedlings were assessed to monitor toxicity reduction.
